Recall of Snow Throwers

May 16, 2011 Comments off

Snow throwers can save hours of shoveling snow every winter and spring. By directing snow through a rotating auger and projecting out through a blower, these machines can quickly and effectively relocate snow banks and make your sidewalk and driveway useable again. But this convenience is all for naught if the product that you purchased is defective and might cause more harm than good.

Snow Thrower

In the past few years, there have been two large recalls of of these tools. Both recalls were induced in order to protect consumers from potentially serious injuries. About 130,000 units of snow throwers built by Troy-Bilt, Yard Machines, and Craftsman were recalled due to defective rims. These two-stage snow throwers, which were all distributed by MTD, have defective plastic rims that were prone to explosion under too much pressure. Explosions that did occur in these products caused serious injuries to the operators, including damaging facial injuries. The often-extreme conditions that these products are used in makes them susceptible to default.

Recall of Snow Throwers

Some single-stage snow blowers produced by Toro were also recalled because of reports of gas leaks. These leaks were a threat to cause an engine fire that could be highly dangerous to the operator of the machine and could potentially cause a larger fire if the machine were being operated near flammable items.

Consumers should be aware of these recalls and others when going to purchase one of these products. Be sure to purchase products that will help you maintain your property and not cause unnecessary injury.

If you have been injured by a defective product, you need legal counsel that can fight for your compensation. Visit the website of Rhinelander defective snow thrower lawyers at Habush Habush & Rottier, S.C. for more information about defective snow throwers.

Snow Throwers – Getting Ready For Snow

May 9, 2011 Comments off

Snow throwers – already? Where did the summer go? Well, it may not be quite time to start clearing snow, but Fall is definitely the best time to get your snow thrower ready for what’s coming. Waiting for the first good snow storm before breaking out your snow removal equipment is just asking for some serious aggravation.

Snow Thrower

So, on a nice sunny day in the fall of the year, dust the cobwebs off your machine and check out at least these items:

Snow Throwers – Getting Ready For Snow

Change the oil in your engine. If you have last winter’s oil in your engine it will be contaminated with water from condensation, and chemicals from the combustion process, especially is you used it in heavy snow last winter.
Dump any gasoline that was left in the tank from last year–if you did not put stabilizer in the gas at the end of last season. It is usually a good idea to replace the gas line filter at this time as well. Then fill your gas tank with fresh gas.
Check out any belts you have on your machine. Make sure they are tight and in good shape. If there are any cracks or fraying, replace the belt.
Test all your controls and make sure they work smoothly. A drop or two of liquid graphite at hinge points will usually make things work better. Grease any fittings you have on your machine, and oil the bearings and any other places that require it. It’s best to refer to your operator’s manual before applying oil and grease.
Check your auger and impeller (two-stage machines) for cracks and missing pieces. If you find any problems you should have them repaired now–or if there is significant damage, you may want to replace the damaged part. Picking up rocks along with the snow you are clearing away can raise havoc with augers and impellers.
If you have any rusty places on your machine, you will want to keep those spots doused with a rust preventing oil–or better yet; sand the spot down, apply a metal primer, and then repaint the area.
Check out your tires for cuts, cracks, and the ability to hold air. There is something especially discouraging when you want to use your snow thrower to clear off your driveway before going to work (especially that big snowplow mound of snow at the end of your drive), and discover you have flat tire. That’s a real bummer.
If your machine has tire chains, now is the time to inspect them closely for bent or broken links, as well as any places that show excessive wear. Replace bad links now. Make sure chains are installed properly and won’t slip off when you need them most.
With fresh gas and oil, and everything repaired and oiled up, the final check is to start the engine to make sure everything works as expected. You can’t check the engine under load, but you can determine its ease of starting and idle smoothness. If it starts hard in warm weather, it may not start at all in cold weather.

O.K., you’re all set for the coming snow. But even if you are reading this during your first big snowfall, it would be to your advantage to check over the items presented above before you tackle that first big drift. Snow throwers are wonderful machines, but only when they work well. And, they work best when properly cared for.

Snow Throwers

April 26, 2011 Comments off

Snow throwers serve a great purpose during the wintertime. This article will give you information on how snow throwers do their job and how to get the best results from your snow thrower. These tips will help you to reduce the time that you have to spend outside getting rid of that cold and wet snow.

Snow Thrower

Snow throwers Can Keep You Warm

Snow Throwers

When there is snow outside. many men have to leave the warmth of their home to keep their sidewalks and driveways clean so that their family can go on with their life as normal. Your local government keeps the roads clear of snow. but the snow in front of your home is your responsibility. A snow thrower will allow you to quickly do this job and get back into the warmth of your home in no time.

Gas Engine Single Stage Operation Snow Throwers

You can find a snow thrower that is either single stage or two stages. The single stage snow thrower has a hard rubber or a combination metal and plastic auger. The engine uses a gear system to drive the auger. which cuts through the ice by chipping it. cellecting it. and then spitting it out of the snow thrower with quite a bit of force. This gets the ice off of the driveway. A single stage snow thrower is self-propelled as it rides on the snow. This kind of machine clears 12 to 22-inch width strips so it will most likely take several passes to clear your driveway of snow.

The More Powerful Two-stage Machine

The two-stage machine includes a pump in addition to the auger that is in a single stage machine. In a two-stage machine. the ice that is churned by the auger is sent to a pump. The pump helps to increase the distance that the clear snow goes and in some cases. the distance that the snow is thrown can be up to 45′. Children love watching the snow flow through the air and this machine can make your snowy chore easy and fun. These machines can make a path of 2 to 3-feet in one pass so it will take you less time to clear the driveway and/or sidewalk.

How to Remove the Snow Easily

o Sprinkle salt over the snow to help clear it more easily. (It is important to check with your local authorities to see if this is allowed.)

o When using your snow thrower. you need to wear many layers of clothing instead of just one layer to ensure that you stay warm.

o Spiked shoes are a good idea to help make sure that you do not slip on the hard snow. Keep in mind that if you fall. you could break a leg. arm. or another bone or you could hurt your head. That is why you want to take precautions to ensure that you are safe.

By Any Name, Snow Blowers and Throwers Ease the Burden

April 13, 2011 Comments off

Here in the Midwest, there is the occasional winter that passes by without leaving behind much snow. However, that is somewhat rare, and in recent years we’ve trended towards heavier snowfalls.

Snow Thrower

In 2009, there were record-setting snowfalls throughout the Midwest and northern states. We’re talking one, two, and even three feet of the white stuff! Sure, you can grab your shovel and start digging yourself out after snowfalls such as these, and good luck with that! Or you can ease your burden by purchasing a snow blower.

By Any Name, Snow Blowers and Throwers Ease the Burden

Depending on what you feel that you need to be prepared for, there are a variety of snow blowers that would suit you. Here is just a quick general overview of some of the different types of snow blowers and the situations that they were designed for:

-For smaller jobs and lighter snowfalls, Toro makes what they call the “Power Shovel.” This is a light-weight, low-maintenance tool that will enable you to clear “dustings” and light snowfalls without having to perform the act of manually shoveling. The Power Shovel is relatively inexpensive, as are similar light-weight snow throwers: usually around 0-0.

-Next is the single-stage, gas-fueled, push-behind snow blower. These are designed to handle moderate snowfalls of around 8 inches or less; NOT for heavy snowfalls. These machines are light-weight and should mainly be used on flat surfaces such as sidewalks, decks, and paved driveways. There is a pretty wide variety of snow blowers in this category, but generally they range from around 0-0.

-And then we come to the double-stage gas-fueled “heavyweights” for heavy snowfalls. These possess powerful engines and can plow through most high-accumulation situations, up to around 24 inches (the deluxe models can handle more). They can even plow through that stubborn ice and snow pile that gathers at the end of your driveway. Power steering, headlights, and even heated hand grips are included with many of the top-of-the-line two-stage models. These usually go for over ,000.

Now you’re wondering what the difference is between a single-stage and a double-stage snowblower. Well, here’s your answer:

-Single-stage machines use an auger (a metal corkscrew-shaped apparatus) that spins fast, picks up ice and snow, and delivers it to the discharge chute. Single-stage units are best used on pavement or flat surfaces mainly because the auger comes in contact with the surface that it is cleaning, and any unevenness or debris might cause damage or negatively affect the unit’s performance.

-Double-stage machines use a rotating “impeller” which collects snow and ice before “pumping” it to the main auger to be broken up and distributed to the discharge chute. Therefore, double-stage machines can be used for very heavy accumulations of snow and ice (up to 36″), and are not as restricted as single-stage machines are as far as the types of terrain they can navigate.

As always, with any piece of machinery or “yard” tool, you’ll want to read your owner’s manual thoroughly. Keep your equipment clean and well-maintained. You can do little things to increase the longevity of your snow thrower, such as wiping it down after use to avoid freezing or rusting, and keeping it well-oiled.

Also, be sure to get your snow blower serviced every few years. Find a reliable snowblower repair shop that is not only up-to-speed on snow blower repair, but that can give advice on snow thrower maintenance. Also, though a repair or service outfit may be well-versed to Toro snow blower repair or MTD snowblower repair (the more popular brands), make sure they service the lesser-known brands, too, if that is what you own.

Tricks For Removing Snow Easily Using Snow Throwers

March 13, 2011 Comments off

Snow throwers will allow you to cozy up inside your house

Snow Thrower

When it snows, it is the worst time for men folk of the house. (I know, I know, it is not politically correct to say this, but give that guy some credit) while the government and municipal corporations try to keep the highways and streets clear of snow. The snow removal, starting from the roof by using rakes , the front of the house to the gate is the family responsibility. To ease this work we have snow throwers that can do your job in a jiffy, allowing you to go back into the house quickly.

Tricks For Removing Snow Easily Using Snow Throwers

Single Stage Snow Throwers Are Gas Engine Operated

A snow thrower can be single stage or two stages. A single stage snow thrower has an auger made out of combination of metal and plastic or hard rubber. The Engine drives an auger through a series of gears. This auger cuts through the thick coat of ice by chipping, collects it, and then directs it out of the machine with some force. This way the ice on the ground is cleared from the driveway. In a single stage thrower, the machine is self-propelling as it rides on snow. Single stage machine clear a width of 12″ to 22′ and multiple passes are required to clear the snow in the driveway.

A Two-stage Machine Is More Powerful

A two-stage machine has a pump in addition to the auger in a single stage machine. The ice churned by auger is sent to pump. Additional force imparted to snow by the pump makes it possible for the machine to throw the cleared snow to greater distance. Distance can be up to 45′ in some cases. Children enjoy this and with a double throw machine, laughter of children comes free. (Keep your children out of the landing place of snow) This makes the work of clearing snow easy and enjoyable. Double stage machines clear the width of 2′ to 3′ in one pass and this reduces time required for clearing

Tricks For Removing Snow Easily.

The snow can be cleared easily by sprinkling salt over the snow. (Check with authorities though, before sprinkling salt on snow to check if it is permitted).
When you go out in the snow for clearing it, use layered clothing instead of a single layer of thick clothing.
Take precaution, and do not to slip on the hard snow. There is a possibility of landing on the head. Use spiked shoes if possible.

Snow Throwers – A Primer

February 20, 2011 Comments off

Snow throwers come in many sizes and with many different features; so sometimes trying to make a decision on which one to buy is almost mind numbing. If you have experience with these machines, you likely already know the pros and cons of various designs and models. But, if you have never worked with one of these machines before, hopefully the following will be of help:

Snow Thrower

Basic Designs

Snow Throwers – A Primer

Snow throwers (sometimes called snow blowers) have a powered “auger” built onto the front of a frame where it spins at a high rate of speed and forces any snow it contacts up and into a chute that shoots the snow away from what you are clearing off. The auger can be powered by either an electric motor or a gasoline engine. This is called a single-stage machine.

All snow throwers have an auger on the front, but the larger machines also have an “impeller” that picks up the snow delivered by the auger and throws it farther away at a higher rate of speed and volume. This is called a two-stage machine and is used for heavier snows and larger areas to be cleared off.

Almost all single-stage blowers need to be pushed into the snow by the operator, while most two-stage models have powered drive wheels that do much of the work.

Engine Power

The smallest units are used mostly for decks, patios, and short sidewalks, and fairly light snow. These small machines can be powered by an electric motor, which means they cannot extend out from your house further than the length of your power cord and extension cord.

In addition to electric power, single-stage snow throwers are also powered by gasoline engines. Two-cycle engines (where you mix your oil and gas together) are being phased out because they pollute the air; so the standard four-cycle engine is now used predominately.

The larger two-stage machines, which are self-propelled, use quite large engines that can be up to 15 horsepower. However, engine size alone doesn’t mean the machine is efficient–you need to do some of your own research to determine the right combination for your particular needs.

Mounted Snow Throwers

These throwers are attached to mobile machines like ATVs, garden tractors, small farm tractors, Bobcats, Forklifts, and the like. They are used when very large areas and heavy snow needs to be cleared off.

Special Features

It seems like the larger the snow thrower, the more features that seem to be available. They have chains to go on the tires of self-propelled machines (a must). Some units come with power steering, heated hand grips, electric starters, and headlights. There are even enclosures available to keep the operator out of the elements. There seems to be no end to gadgets made just for this equipment

Cost

The smallest electric models can be had for a street price of around to 0, plus the cost of any extension cords you need. The single-stage gasoline engine machines run around 0 to 0, and the larger two-stage units cost between 0 and over ,000. Mounted units can cost well into the thousands of dollars.

Well, there you have a quick overview of snow throwers. If you are in the market for one, the best thing to do is ask those people who own a machine and find out what the pros and cons for each model are. If you can find a sales person that is knowledgeable–so much the better.  Good luck.

Snow Throwers – What Type Is Right For You?

January 13, 2011 Comments off

Should You Get A Snow Thrower?

Snow Thrower

These neat pieces of kit can be a godsend in winter, making short work of removing the snow that blocks the access to your home and therefore allowing you to stay nice and toasty indoors for longer! While the city and state administration take care of removing the snow public roads, the responsibility is all yours when it comes to your property so you may have to brave the arctic weather to clear the footpath to your door and the driveway. This is traditionally the men’s job to sort out. A power tool like the snow thrower can be the difference between hours of punishing, back-breaking physical efforts and getting it all done very quickly.

Snow Throwers – What Type Is Right For You?

Single-Stage Snow Thrower

Snow throwers, usually powered by a gas two-stroke engine, can be either single stage or two-stage. Both kinds feature a metallic or plastic trepan designed to cut through the snow or ice. Sometimes it can even be made of hard rubber. The machine features a series of gears that will drive the trepan to break off, gather and then blow the snow out of the way with impressive strength and velocity. The spinning trepan, or auger, contributes to propelling the thrower by being in contact with the ground, and pulling the machine forward as a result. A single-stage blower can usually cope with clearing between 12 and 22 inches of snow with each pass. You will most likely need several passes to rid your driveway of snow so these are usually only recommended for light residential usage.

What’s In A Two-Stage Thrower?

In addition to the trepan or auger, a two-stage thrower also features a pump, which makes the machine a lot more efficient by propelling the snow pumped up into the thrower much farther away. Sometime they can throw the snow gathered as far as 45 feet away, which can act as a magnet for all the kids in the neighborhood, so you should make sure they stand well away from the place the snow is going to land. A two-stage thrower is so powerful that it will make short work of any snow clearing job you can think of, and you may even have quite a bit of fun in the process! In a single pass your double-stage machine will be able to clear a width of snow of between 2 and 3 feet, so you should be back inside in no time at all.

Making Snow Removal Easier

– If this is allowed by your local authorities, you may be allowed to sprinkle salt onto it to ease up the process. Always check before going ahead to make sure you are complying with local regulations.

– Think layers! When going out in very cold weather to clear the driveway after a snowfall, try to wear several layers of clothing: you will be better insulated against the cold and able to work more comfortably.

– Be extremely careful when walking out on the snow or ice to clear the driveway as it is easy to fall and sustain serious injuries as a result: shoes with added grip may be a worthwhile consideration.
